Making the right choice in flooring for your home can seem to be a big decision.

Not only does it depend on your own personal tastes, but you have to consider the practicality. This will be the surface which you, your family and guest will all walk across. The right floor is essential for the perfect room. Don't forget that the floor with have a huge effect on a room, not only its look, but the atmosphere, the acoustics and the temperature. Not to mention that you will be living with it, so it will need to survive spills, kids, pets and time. But if you just answer a few questions right from the beginning, then you should be able to buy without worrying and make sure that you enjoy your new floor for years.

- How heavy is the traffic where the floor will be? If people are walking backwards and forwards over the floor a lot, then it will take more punishment than an area where people don't walk so often. Heavy traffic areas are typically halls, stairways, living rooms. Heavy traffic areas are also likely to need cleaning more often.

When it comes to traffic levels in the house, a large part of that will be your family. If you have young children then there will be more traffic, pets also make a difference

- Kitchens
Kitchen floors need to be durable and easy to clean. Good choices are vinyl (or linoleum) or tiles of ceramic or stone. Wood is popular for kitchen floors but can require more maintenance. Vinyl is an inexpensive option, it is easy to clean and is available in limitless designs. Stone and ceramic tiles more expensive, but also more robust, simple to maintain and come in a huge range of styles and designs. Before opting for ceramic tiles, however remember that they are prone to cracking unless they are set on a truly solid underfloor.

Tiles and vinyl can be slippery, especially when wet, so it is always best to consider textured options, especially if there are children or anyone vulnerable to slipping.

Hardwood is an ever popular choice for flooring. For active kitchens, wood is strong and can cope with lots of traffic. Do bear in mind, though, that wood is porous and in the kitchen will have to be protected from stains and moisture. Make sure you have a protective coating applied.

- Bathrooms
Just like kitchens, bathrooms floors have to put up with a lot of moisture. Again, this makes vinyl and stone or ceramic tiles popular as they all cope with the damp atmosphere well. Again, wood floors will need protection from the damp. Some carpets are suitable for bathrooms, but it depends on the materials and construction.

- Living Areas
The rest of your home needs as much care living space really comes down to a matter of choosing the floor. But for large part it is more down to your personal tastes. Some people would be happy with ceramin tiles in their living room, some people think that nothing beats hardwood it really does come down to what you want and your budget. Regardless of what you choose there will be a product which will be suitable for the traffic the area gets.

Hardwood flooring has is naturally beautiful and elegant. It feels warmer and is slightly flexible, making it softer to walk on than other hard flooring. You have a range of options when choosing hardwood flooring. Oak has been the most common flooring material for centuries, but there are dozens of suitable specied of wood and all brings their own character.

All wood comes in different grades, which not only affects the price, but the appearance. These quality grades range from 'character' boards, which will have minor irregularities, to boards that are perfectly smooth and almost completely uniform.

Do not use wood flooring below ground in basements. Because of the constant humidity you will get problems with your wood floors. For the look of wood in a basement you would be better to get laminate.

Don't forget carpet. With all of the choices to be had in flooring, it is easy to overlook a good carpet. For sheer warmth carpet is hard to beat. Carpet really comes into its own in bedrooms. Any room which you are likely to be barefoot frequently, then carpet is the traditional choice.

Carpets also offer a certain amount of sound-proofing between upper and lower floors in addition to a degree of thermal insulation. So carpet is a good option for rooms that have unheated space below them (such as rooms over garages). Carpet is in an almost unlimited choice of styles, piles and colours, with options for any budget. Whether you prefer a classic wool carpet or something more resilient, like nylon, there will be something which suits. Always remember carpet is soft, so the thickness of the padding underneath it is just as important as the carpet itself, particularly in deciding the life of the carpet.

Choosing the floor you want can be a big decision, but with a little forethought, it doesn't need to be a stressful experience. Plan ahead and speak to an expert.
